Attack by Eggs

TWO youths speeding along Kingsbury Road on Tuesday afternoon pelted eggs at a dog and his owner, for their own amusement.
Jason Leigh, 25, was covered in the sticky substance whilst walking his Labrador on the pathway opposite Kingsbury Park, when hit by eggs chucked by the pranksters who sped off in a black Volkswagen Golf.
Both were unharmed but Mr. Leigh was startled by the flying objects saying “It could have been stones or bricks, which could have turned into a more serious situation.”

Self-reflective Report: Attack by Eggs 7

Through a friend who knew the victim attacked, this NIB was created. I considered the elements of this report demonstrated a unique description compared to the other articles written, and wanted to integrate a variety of techniques in writing styles.

Although the incident was dangerous, the news illustrated a humorous tone but was balanced with the victim’s quote. I felt the short quote given generated the seriousness of the account reported. I was unable to acquire a lot of detail to produce a longer piece hence a nib was more suitable in this instance.

From news writing lessons, I attempted to create a NIB considering all the basics requirements needed, however as with previous short articles produced, I found the method proved to be challenging yet again. Although I could think of active words to apply, I struggled with condensing information to produce a concise and descriptive piece.

My first choice of using ‘eggs’ as the introduction word appeared to lack brightness, and by re-arranging the format to select active words I decided that ‘youths speeding’ generated a more dynamic description.

Once the incident had been established, I decided to investigate further on whether there had been a reported case on the two youths involved. Ringing the police was an exciting but nervous new challenge, but instead of assisting me with my queries, they advised me to browse through their website to find related information. I found their unsupportive conduct was due to me being an inexperienced journalist, but also made me aware how demanding the job involves.

Furthermore, I would have liked to have questioned any witnesses present down Kingsbury Road, or whether there had been similar incidents in the area, and if the victim and dog was targeted for a reason.
